Our Mission

Why we're doing this.

The gap we're closing

The fading Punjabi fluency among millennial and younger generations is opening a painful gap between older Punjabi patients and the healthcare teams who care for them. In response, we launched this project — an effort to build bridges where words are missing, and to proudly preserve our maa boli for generations to come.

What we hope to achieve

We're developing educational resources to help beginner learners — and those with conversational Punjabi — improve, so they can better serve the Punjabi community and advance healthcare equity.

Why language is care

Voices on language & health equity.

Being able to speak in one's mother tongue when it concerns health is not asking a favor… it is a basic issue of accessibility, safety, quality, and equality of services. — Office of the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut
If you cannot communicate with your patient, your patient is not safe. — Language Support is Health Equity
Language is not a barrier — it is an opportunity to improve health equity through education. — Health Affairs
Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going. — Rita Mae Brown
Language… holds the key to a people's history and opens the door to cultural and spiritual understanding. — Wilson (1997)
